When should you book your portrait session?
It is best to contact us to arrange a date of time for the portrait session prior to baby’s arrival. We can pencil a date in the diary that is between 3 to 14 days after your due date. This can of course change as sometimes things don’t go to plan, so we can adjust this when needed. We ask that you contact us after baby’s arrival to confirm the final date. It is such a busy and overwhelming time, so we aim to be as flexible as possible to help fit in around your new life with baby.
When will your portrait session be?
Between 3 to 14 days after arrival is the optimum time for a Newborn Portrait session. This enables us to get those super cute sleepy moments, and it is a more comfortable time for baby as they can often enter in to deep newborn sleeps during this period.
Where will the portrait session take place?
Newborn sessions take place at our baby friendly, warm, and cosy studio at Hawkesyard Estate. We heat the room well so that baby feels comfortable and warm – this can often feel especially warm for adults. We will provide you with hot and cold drinks at the studio to help you keep hydrated throughout the session. We recommend that you wear loose fitted clothing to keep you cool during the session. There is lift access to the studio, please ask for directions if you would like to use this. We can also offer at home Newborn sessions in the comfort of your own home for an additional surcharge.
If possible, avoid any tight-ish clothing prior to the session such as socks or tight nappies that may leave wrinkle marks on baby’s skin. Baby will not be wearing any clothes for most of the session, so it allows baby’s skin to look natural and perfect. It is best if baby is sleeping for at least some of the session so we can capture sleepy cute moments. If baby is awake for about thirty minutes or so before the session, this gives baby a better chance of having a good snooze during our session. However, the most important thing is baby being happy and content so please don’t worry if baby does sleep before session if they need to. Also, if possible it is best if baby feeds just prior to us starting the session, then they can happily drift off in to post milk dreams!
We will take lots of breaks throughout the session, and the session will be totally baby led. If baby needs rocking, cuddles and comfort, then we break, if baby is hungry or needs a nappy change then we break. Although these sessions are efficient and swift to ensure we are not asking too much of mom and baby, we also are completely paced by baby and we can take our time. As mentioned, you will be able to have hot or cold drinks during the session, and sit back and enjoy some precious and rare moments of peace! The session will last anywhere between two to three hours, including break times and settling in time. We have a variety of looks, backdrops, and fabrics to use during the session, and please let us know if you have any ideas about outfits that you would like to bring. The key to newborn portraits is patience and taking time to settle baby enough to get the best images. We invite you to sit back and relax and enjoy these moments in our studio.
The Messy Stuff
I fully expect baby to poo and wee and this is totally fine, please don’t worry! We have cleaning up items on hand, and clean up breaks are part of every session.
What Should We Wear?
We have lots of wraps and props at the studio, but we often find that families have specific items that they would like their little one posed in or with - so please do bring along any clothes or props that you like - the more the merrier.
As regards parents, siblings, grandparents, family - basically anyone who isn't the newborn but might appear in a picture - please wear whatever you like, feel comfortable in and would like a picture in.
If in doubt, we would recommend wearing something you feel is timeless - as we hope that these pictures will be passed down through the generations of your family - but ultimately these are your photographs and we want you to wear something you like. We find that it is often the shots of baby with parents or siblings that people prefer and so our advice would be to come along and expect to be in a picture - of course you don't have to at all - but most people enjoy it and end up preferring these pictures.
Most of all, we hope you have fun with us and enjoy the pictures at the end of it all!
